If your garbage disposal suddenly stops working, don’t buy a new one yet.

I work on garbage disposals in Naples regularly, and many units homeowners assume are broken are simply jammed or clogged. I often get the existing disposal working again without replacement, saving the homeowner the cost of a new unit.

Garbage disposal humming but not spinning

This is one of the most common problems I see. You flip the switch, hear the motor humming, but nothing turns. Food fibers, vegetable scraps or another object may be preventing the mechanism from rotating.

Don’t keep switching it on. A jammed motor can overheat. I first check whether the disposal can be safely freed and returned to service. Many times, it can.

Kitchen sink won’t drain or water is backing up

Sometimes the call is simply: “My kitchen sink is full of water and won’t drain.” The blockage may be inside the disposal or at an accessible drain connection. I check where the problem actually is before recommending replacement.

A sink that won’t drain does not automatically mean you need a new garbage disposal.

Garbage disposal won’t turn on

No humming and no movement doesn’t automatically mean the motor is dead. I check the straightforward possibilities first, including whether the disposal has tripped its reset and whether the unit is physically jammed.

Garbage disposal leaking under the sink

Where it leaks matters. Water can appear around the sink mounting area, dishwasher hose, drain connection or the disposal itself. An accessible connection may be repairable. If the actual disposal housing has failed, replacement is usually the more sensible option.

When I recommend garbage disposal replacement

I’m not interested in replacing a disposal that can reasonably be repaired. I recommend replacement when the existing unit has actually failed, is leaking through the housing, is badly deteriorated, or repair no longer makes financial sense.

For a straightforward replacement, I remove the existing unit and install a customer-provided disposal using compatible existing plumbing and electrical connections.

How much does InSinkErator installation cost in Naples?

If you already purchased an InSinkErator or another replacement disposal, my labor price for a straightforward replacement using existing compatible connections is $129.

But if you haven’t purchased one yet, let me check the old disposal first. You may only need the $99 repair.

Golden Gate Estates: garbage disposals and septic systems

If your Golden Gate Estates or Naples property uses a septic system, be conservative about how much food waste you put through the disposal. A disposal grinds food into smaller pieces; it does not make that material disappear. The waste still enters the home’s wastewater system.

Snowbirds: check your disposal before leaving Naples

If you are closing your Naples home for the summer, don’t leave food debris sitting inside the disposal or ignore a sink that is already draining slowly. Before leaving, run and rinse the disposal, make sure the sink drains normally, and check underneath the cabinet for moisture or leaks.

A small problem is much easier to handle while you are still in Naples than after the home has been closed for several months.

Should you call a plumber or handyman for a garbage disposal?

For straightforward garbage disposal repair, unclogging or like-for-like replacement using existing compatible connections, this may be a handyman-size job. I handle these smaller jobs without turning every jammed disposal into a major service call.

If I find that the problem requires new plumbing, plumbing alterations, new electrical work or another licensed trade scope, that is where I stop and tell the homeowner what I found.
